What is Ultrasonic Welding?

Employing vibration, force and time, an ultrasonic welder forms a weld by pressing the parts to be joined together and scrubbing them against one another to break up and disperse the surface oxides and contaminates. The resultant clean base metal surfaces are held tightly together. Crystal boundaries are brought within atomic distance of one another allowing the strong attraction of atoms across the interface to create a metallurgical bond without reaching the melt temperature of the metals being joined.

Since ultrasonic metal welding does not depend on achieving a melt of the metals to be joined, their melt temperatures and their thermal conductivity are not process factors. The entire welding process is accomplished in approximately 250 ms.

  • Theory of Ultrasonic Welding: Ultrasonic welding of nonferrous metals has been shown to be efficient and effective as demonstrated by a number of practical production applications.
  • Ultrasonic Energy Welds Copper to Aluminum (Welding Journal January 1997): Ultrasonic welding of copper to aluminum has been shown to be efficient and effective as demonstrated by a number of practical production applications.
  • Ultrasonic Energy Welds Berylluim Copper Springs to Copper Frame: Ultrasonic metal welding provides a sound solution to a production problem with superior performance, improved throughput and reduced maintenance. W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. improves its competitive advantage by reducing 'Cost of Goods Sold'.
  • Ultrasonics Join Harley-Davidson Wire Harnesses: During the '80's, like most companies, Harley-Davidson found itself mired in a weak market. The desire to improve the company's fiscal strength began with a renewed emphasis on quality. One area Harley-Davidson targeted for improved over- all quality and process control was the manufacture of wire harnesses for its FLT family of bikes.
  • Ultrasonics Health Summaries:Information summaries are from leading researchers, to provide information regarding persons working or near ultrasonic energy.
